Delve deeper into the art galleries of Berlin with Hotel de Rome

Berlin, March 2012 – Rocco Forte’s Hotel de Rome in Berlin has partnered with GO ART BERLIN to introduce guests to the must-see contemporary art galleries in the city. Three-hour gallery tours of Berlin are on offer, during which guests with a keen interest in art are escorted by a local, professional art historian. The tours are focused around compelling, sometimes ground-breaking galleries, and can be tailored to the artistic preferences of guests, with the opportunity to talk to the gallery owners and, in some cases, meet the artists being exhibited.

Berlin has been fertile ground for artists since the 1920s and 1930s, a period of creative explosion in music, literature, philosophy and art. Expressionism took root in Germany at this time, and was particularly popular in Berlin. The Bauhaus design school, which combined art, architecture and crafts in the stark, experimental, modernist style, was also based in Berlin in the 1930s, where the architect Mies van der Rohe was working.

Against this historical backdrop, Berlin thrives today as a centre for all kinds of art and artists, and the Hotel de Rome’s new Gallery Hopping Package aims to bring guests closer to this strong cultural vein. As well as touring some of the city’s key galleries, guests can make full use of the three day Berlin Museum Passport and explore exciting, temporary exhibitions, such as the blockbuster Gerhard Richter retrospective, ‘Gerhard Richter: Panorama’, currently running at the Neue Nationalgalerie until May 13.

Guests will also have access to the ‛me Collectors Room’, a residence which houses the extensive private collection of distinguished chemist and Doctor Thomas Olbricht, across a diverse range of artistic genres and media from the 16th century to the present. Other galleries worth checking out in Berlin include Contemporary Fine Arts; Gallerie Mehdi Chouakri; Arndt & Partner; and Berlin’s most recent addition to the scene, the Haus der Kunst und Esskultur (‘house of art and dining culture’), which opened in February in the historic building in Auguststrasse that was formerly the Jewish Girls’ School. Inside, Michael Fuchs Galerie uses the former assembly hall to run changing exhibitions of contemporary art and classical modernist works while well-known gallerist Gerd Harry Lybke uses two former classrooms and a corridor to showcase international artists in a second branch of his gallery Eigen & Art Lab.

Hotel de Rome is located on Bebelplatz, off Unter den Linden in the fashionable Mitte district of Berlin. The building was originally constructed in 1889, and housed the head office of Dresdner Bank until 1945. It is one of very few luxury hotels in Berlin located in an original building, making full use of its architectural features.
